Old-Fashioned Homemade Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 6 cups bread flour (you may need a bit more or less, depending on the humidity

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and then stir in the yeast. Allow to proof until yeast resembles a creamy foam, about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Place in a well-oiled bowl, and turn dough to coat. Cover with a damp cloth. Allow to rise until doubled in bulk, about 1 hour.
  3. Punch down dough. Knead for a few minutes, and divide in half. Shape into loaves, and place into two well-oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow to rise for 30 minutes, or until dough has risen 1 inch above pans.
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, or until loaves are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

This recipe harks back to a simpler time, producing a loaf that’s wonderfully dense, slightly sweet, and perfect for everything from hearty sandwiches to toast slathered with jam. The act of kneading and waiting for the bread to rise may feel meditative, reconnecting you with a rhythm of life often lost in the hustle and bustle of modern living. The aroma of freshly baked bread filling your home will bring a sense of comfort and nostalgia that can’t be replicated by any store-bought loaf.

While this recipe may seem basic, it’s important to note the quality of ingredients plays a big role in the final outcome. So opt for high-quality flour, organic sugar, and fresh yeast if possible. You can also add in your own twist by incorporating herbs, seeds, or dried fruit for added flavor and texture. So take some time to slow down, enjoy the process, and savor each slice of homemade goodness with loved ones.
